Anjanette Comer, Star of ‘The Loved One’ and ‘The Appaloosa,’ Dies at 86

Anjanette Comer, the actress who appeared opposite Marlon Brando in the 1966 Western The Appaloosa, has died at 86.

Comer died on May 28 at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center. Her death became public in September after The Hollywood Reporter obtained her death certificate. She had been living with leukemia and heart problems. Read the report.

From Dark Comedy to Westerns

Comer drew attention in the 1965 dark comedy The Loved One. The following year, she starred alongside Brando in The Appaloosa. Her other film credits included Guns for San Sebastian and the 1973 thriller The Baby.

The Roles She Turned Down

Comer was also offered parts in two films that became 1960s landmarks: Barefoot in the Park and Bonnie and Clyde. She declined both. Jane Fonda went on to star in the former, while Faye Dunaway took the role in the latter.

In a later interview, Comer said her relationship with an actor who opposed her film work had affected those decisions. Though her career took a different path, her performances in The Loved One and The Appaloosa remain a memorable part of 1960s cinema.
