Jim Geoghan Dies: ‘The Suite Life of Zack & Cody’ Co-Creator and Veteran TV Producer Was 79
Jim Geoghan, the prolific television writer and producer who co-created the popular Disney Channel comedy The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, has died. He was 79.
Geoghan died in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 6. His daughter, Genevieve Geoghan, confirmed his death. A cause of death was not publicly announced. (people.com)
Creator of a Disney Channel Favorite
Geoghan achieved widespread recognition in 2005 when he and Danny Kallis created The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.
The Disney Channel sitcom starred twin brothers Dylan and Cole Sprouse as Zack and Cody Martin, who lived with their mother at Boston’s luxurious Tipton Hotel. Its cast also included Ashley Tisdale, Brenda Song, Phill Lewis and Kim Rhodes.
The series became one of Disney Channel’s defining shows of the 2000s and ran for three seasons before concluding in 2008. Geoghan received two Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Children’s Program category for his work on the show.
He subsequently joined Kallis and Pamela Eells in creating the successful spinoff The Suite Life on Deck. The new series followed Zack, Cody and several returning characters as they attended school aboard the fictional S.S. Tipton cruise ship.
Geoghan also helped write The Suite Life Movie, released in 2011, and served as an executive producer on the Indian adaptation, The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir. (people.com)

Before finding success with Disney Channel, Geoghan had already built an extensive career as a comedy writer and producer.
His television credits included some of America’s best-known sitcoms, including Three’s Company, Sanford, The Facts of Life, Silver Spoons, Kate & Allie, Mama’s Family, Amen and Too Close for Comfort.
He also worked as a writer and producer on Family Matters, the long-running family sitcom that became a major television success during the 1990s.
Another notable credit was It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, the innovative sitcom starring comedian Garry Shandling, on which Geoghan worked as both a writer and producer.
From Stand-Up Comedy to Television
Geoghan began his entertainment career in New York during the 1970s. He performed as part of the stand-up comedy trio Divided We Stand before turning his attention toward writing.
His early experience performing comedy helped shape the humor, timing and warmth that would later characterize his television projects.
Over the following decades, Geoghan became known for creating comedy that appealed to families while still giving its characters emotional depth.
Accomplished Playwright
Geoghan’s creative work extended beyond television. He was also an accomplished playwright whose productions found success in New York and regional theaters across the United States.
His comedy Only Kidding opened Off-Broadway in 1988 and reportedly ran for approximately 500 performances. The production received two Drama Desk Award nominations.
He later wrote Light Sensitive, which premiered at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in 1993. The play, inspired partly by his experience as a volunteer reader for blind people, was subsequently produced dozens of times around the country. (people.com)
Former Colleagues Pay Tribute
Following news of his death, actress Kim Rhodes, who portrayed Carey Martin on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, remembered Geoghan as an exceptionally kind and generous person.
Rhodes recalled that Geoghan wrote an emotional episode about motherhood for her following the death of her mother, describing the gesture as one of the greatest acts of kindness she had experienced.
Cole Sprouse also praised Geoghan as a wonderful person and leader who brought optimism and humor to the set. He said the producer had been an important part of the cast and crew’s lives throughout their years together. (people.com)
